As growth minded people we know that the mindset plays a key factor in achieving goals.
Ever since Steven R. Covey first popularised the idea of the abundance and scarcity mindset in his
best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, these two opposing attitudes have made people examine their own way of thinking and how it is affecting their progress.
“You are, at this moment, standing right in the middle of your own acres of diamonds.” Earl Nightingale
The scarcity mindset
People who operate from a place of scarcity believe that there is only a finite number of resources and opportunities available. A scarcity mentality is often what prevents many of us from changing, taking risks, or even achieving our goals, as we fear negative outcomes. This way of thinking can hinder us from attaining our ideal lifestyle and can make us settle for comfort instead. Individuals with a scarcity mindset often find it hard to share recognition or be genuinely happy about other people’s successes, as they believe if one person wins, the other one loses.
The abundance mindset
The abundance mentality refers to the belief that there is plenty of everything for everyone and therefore there is no need to settle for mediocre or act out of desperation. This mindset flows out of a deep inner sense of personal worth and security, which inspires individuals to embrace new opportunities and lets them already be assured of a positive outcome.
Someone with this mindset confidently celebrates other people’s success and by aiming for win-win situations consequently also attracts achievements and a supportive environment into their own life.
1. Become aware of your way of thinking
Take some time to notice what type of thoughts dominate your mind.
This self-awareness will be the first step towards regaining control over your limiting thought patterns and reframing them to make them work for you.
2. Outsmart your fears
If worries are preventing you from taking action, write them down and come up with theoretical worst-case scenario solutions for each one of them.
If things go as planned, the risk was well worth taking. If things go wrong, you will be prepared and will have put plans in place.
3. Focus on gains
Instead of focusing on negative outcomes and failure, approach everything with a growth mindset.
E.g., If you have been meaning to make a change in your life, such as starting a business, instead of obsessing over the statistics about how many start-up companies fail in the first year, focus on the benefits that taking this step will bring to you, such as all the learnings you will gain from the experience of starting a company and the potential of succeeding.
4. Never-ending learning
Spend a little time each day getting better at one skill. This might feel insignificant in the
short-term but in the long-term will add up to substantial growth. The knowledge will fill you with confidence and resilience that is essential for accomplishment.
5. Create an environment of abundance
Read, listen, or watch personal development material and surround yourself with abundantly minded people. The attitude of our close friends and the people we spend time with rub off onto us. Supportive connections will cheer you on and help you grow instead of being envious.
6. Aim for win-win outcomes
Rid yourself of the belief that if someone wins, the other one loses and always aim for win-win outcomes instead. This will help you form a strong network that you can reach back to when needed.
7. Think limitless
Temporarily remove obstacles, such as not having enough time, skills, or resources from your way of thinking. This will promote creative thinking and help you come up with alternative ways to make your goals happen.
8. Share
If you feel you don’t have enough money, keep some of your extra cash aside and give it to someone who needs it more. If you feel you are not getting enough recognition, give it to someone else. Giving some away and still having enough left will reinforce your abundance mindset.
9. Appreciate
Keeping a gratitude journal or just taking a few minutes each day to reflect on the things you appreciate in life will make you feel lucky and positive about life’s possibilities and dare more.
As Tony Robbins says ”When you are grateful, fear disappears and abundance appears.”
