Why to set goals

Updated: Feb 20, 2022

Setting goals is known to be one of the fundamental habits successful people share in common.

But why is it so important? Here are 7 benefits of setting goals.

"The person on top of the mountain didn't fall there" Vincent Lombardi

1) Goals set our direction

It doesn’t matter how productive we are, if we spend hours efficiently heading into the wrong direction, the hours are not used effectively and do not progress us. Setting goals will make sure our efforts always move us closer towards our destination.

2) Goals guide our actions

Most of the time things don’t fall into place. If we don’t know what we want, we won’t know what to ask for, what opportunities to seize or what habits to adopt.

3) Goals build a life of purpose

Goals help us view our life as a whole and help us focus on the truly important. When we begin with the end in mind and think about what we would like to be saying about our life looking back on it at old age “I should have watched more TV” usually isn’t part of it. By identifying the things that really matter to us, we make sure that we spend our time in the right way.

4) Goals keep us focused

Goals keep our attention on course and automatically reduce distractions that will spin us around in circles. This will lead to quicker successes, which allows us to pursue more.

5) Goals help us use our time effectively

Knowing our goals and their timeframes will help us prioritise and reduce procrastination. We will know which requests and opportunities to accept and which ones to decline. It will also ensure we regularly allocate time to the areas that don’t produce instant gratification but are essential in achieving our long-term vision.

6) Goals keep us motivated

Knowing what life we are working towards will feed us with the daily excitement we need to keep up the momentum.

Seeing the benefit in an otherwise mundane task will change our attitude towards it and can even build a drive for it.

7) Keeps you moving

Reaching the goal is not the goal – to keep on progressing is. Once we have achieved one level, we can strive for more advanced ones. This will continuously expand our comfort zone, strengthen our confidence and empower us to reach for more challenging ambitions. Goals can change as we change and sometimes we need to amend course.
